Words Change Lives: About Jayme Amyett Durant

When I read The Diary of Anne Frank in seventh grade, I was hooked—I knew I wanted to write. I understood that compelling words touched hearts and changed lives, and even a teenager could answer that call. Beyond the passion for writing, I delighted in a relationship with God and carried a message of hope in Jesus Christ.

ABOUT WRITING AND COMMUNICATIONS

Writing is still the passion of my life. I continue to write professionally at work and as a freelancer. While I serve at a Christian organization as Director of Communications and Executive Editor of publications and content, this is my personal blog. If you spend much time here, you’re probably a writer, seeking to sharpen your communication skills. I help people like you discover their voice, refine their skills, and shape their message.

In my day job, I lead a team of professional writers, editors, media managers, designers, and communicators. We write, edit, and develop the following resources and more.

  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Devotionals
  • News
  • Radio, film, and podcast scripts
  • Media presentations
  • Web content
  • Emails and eblasts
  • Ebooks
  • Social media
  • Advertising and promotional pieces
  • Speaking presentations
  • Other communications materials

So, you’ll see my posts about creating content and stories for communications. Fun stuff! This is what I do every day. I work with a team of talented writers and communications experts. They amaze me.

I’m providing the following information for those who may have questions about my experience and background. You may also wonder why I’ve written about some of the things you find here. So here goes:

ABOUT FREELANCE WRITING, EDITING, GHOSTWRITING, AND MORE

I freelanced as a writer, editor, ghostwriter, and/or speechwriter for about 25 years. I ghostwrote and developmentally edited books for a Dallas publishing group and private clients. My articles have appeared in publications produced by Christianity Today, Focus on the Family, Special Family Ministries, Institute for Creation Research, and others.

I have experience writing for a variety of homeschooling publications and Christian organizations.  I served on the leadership team for the Dallas Christian Writers Guild and as co-founder of the Denton Christian Writers Guild.

ABOUT WOMEN & LEADERSHIP

I’m only the second woman to serve at the executive level in the organization I work for–a ministry that’s been around for almost 50 years. I often encounter new experiences as a woman in leadership in a male-dominated environment, so I’ll occasionally pass along the things I learn in that realm. I want to encourage women and girls to use their writing and speaking gifts to soar!

Through the years, I’ve held a variety of leadership positions: administrator for Enrichment Classes, Inc., a DFW area homeschooling organization; advisory board member of Special Family ministries; media spokesperson for the Denton Area Life Chain; and president of Denton County Home School Association, one of the largest homeschooling organizations in the country.

My involvement in small group church ministries included small group leadership and overseer roles; I am also a Bible Training Center for Leaders (BTCL) graduate, a two-year lay seminary program. My children and I participated in Bible Study Fellowship for over seven years. I’ve been a guest speaker for a variety of events/forums including creation ministry, special needs organizations, epilepsy associations, homeschooling organizations, women’s groups, youth groups, and churches.

ABOUT TEACHING, TUTORING, AND MENTORING

As a former high school educator, I have a heart for teaching and training. Building relationships with my students was the highlight of my experience as a public school teacher—each teen graduated with a piece of my heart.

I privately taught and tutored high school and college students in writing through the years; some of those students garnered recognition and praise for exceptional writing skills at the college level (including Rhodes, Truman, Marshall, and Rotary scholarship nominations).

I continued to follow my love of teaching by mentoring aspiring writers for years, although my schedule limitations now keep me from accepting private clients. My main message to my students and clients: hone your skills as you use your unique gifts to communicate, teach, engage, entertain, inspire, and motivate. Only you can tell your story–so tell it well!

ABOUT HOMESCHOOLING

I homeschooled my four children from preschool to high school graduation–a 22-year journey of God’s grace and blessing. My children are now amazing young adults. One holds a master’s degree in communications after interning at the White House and receiving numerous distinguished awards and scholarships throughout her college years. My second daughter has special needs and participates enthusiastically in Special Olympics and lifelong learning classes for adults. My son went to college on a baseball scholarship and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. My youngest daughter earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in taxation, and she is the ultimate expression of art lived out. She teaches vintage swing dance nationally and internationally. She finds beauty everywhere. My children all love the Lord and love each other–homeschooling worked for us!

 TRIVIA

Filming at Matanuska Glacier was the most exciting adventure I ever embarked on, but going to the Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice film locations in England is right up there on the excitement scale. What can I say? I’m the adventurous sort.

I am a former Dallas radio talk show host—“Saturday Afternoon with Jayme.” Notable guests included Keith Green, Dallas Holm, Jimmy Draper, and more; I also emceed concerts for Amy Grant, Truth, the Imperials, and others.

I abhor abuse, root for underdogs, and hate legalism–it’s always all about grace! None of my close friends are persnickety. I’ll never be a vegan because I love steak. I like cold-weather destinations for vacation, or wherever my grandbabies happen to be. I think kindness is a lost art. My biggest regret is not knowing my mother after I grew up.

I’m still kind of proud that when I was a student at West Hurst Elementary School, I broke the city record for the 400-meter run and won the Turkey Trot three years in a row.

My highest honors, however, are displayed in the lives of my incredible children. I’m privileged to be the mother of Karis, Bethany, Caleb, and Grace.
